Apple iPhone 4 may go on sale in China by September

China Unicom, China’s second-largest telecommunications operator, may start selling Apple Inc’s iPhone 4 in the mainland market in September, state television reported on Thursday.

“China Unicom has reached an agreement with Apple, and the iPhone 4 may enter the mainland market by as early as next month,” the report said, citing a company statement released to the ongoing China Internet Conference in Beijing.

Apple iPhone 4 may go on sale in China by September

China Unicom officials in Beijing and Hong Kong declined to comment. Apple could not immediately be reach for comment.

“The rumour has been out for the last couple of days. It is something positive for China Unicom but not very significant as I think most subscribers find the price of the iPhone too high,” said Victor Yip, a Hong-Kong based analyst with UOB Kay Hian.

Various news media have reported this week that China Unicom may become Apple’s vendor for its popular iPad and iPhone 4 products. The reports have been unconfirmed by the company.

China Unicom, the sole telecom distributor of Apple’s iPhone, has seen slow sales for the popular handset because of high subscription fees and stiff competition from lower priced Android handsets.

China Mobile Ltd, the country’s largest provider, has also expressed interest in bringing in Apple’s iPhone and iPad products.

Apple opened its second flagship store in China last month and is on track to have 25 retail outlets in the country by the end of next year. Apple executives said in April that they saw the Chinese market as a major growth opportunity.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 was announced months ago and an unlocked version was purported to cost you big bucks – if you’re thinking $700 you’d be in the ballpark.
But all that’s history. The Xperia X10 is here and it won’t require you to take out a second mortgage to own it. Just because it’s now available and sports some interesting features, don’t get all 5-year-old-on-Christmas-morning excited; the smartphone is late to the party, which means it has some dated technology on it.

HTML5-Optimized Yahoo Mail Hits the iPad

Yahoo on Tuesday unveiled an updated, HTML5-optimized version of Yahoo Mail for the iPad, promising a faster, more organized, and feature-rich experience.

“If you’ve used our recently launched HTML5 mobile Web mail for iPhone you’ll feel right at home,” Lee Parry, product manager for Yahoo Mail, wrote in a blog post. “We’ve kept all the things users love about our new mobile Web mail experience, while also optimizing for the gorgeous large screen of the iPad.”

If you don’t have an Internet connection, Yahoo Mail on the iPad will use local caching capabilities to allow users to access and search their mail. You can search using full search, personal folders, or a smart folder of most important contacts.

Photo attachments will also be viewable in their full form or as inbox previews, Yahoo said, and the inbox itself has a dual-pane view.

The revamped Yahoo Mail “will be available globally to anyone who has an iPad,” Parry said. Access it via Safari on the iPad.

Will AT&T iPhone users really defect for Verizon?

Will they stay or will they go?

That’s the big question AT&T executives are likely asking themselves about the millions of iPhone customers who may consider leaving the operator once the popular smartphone is offered on other carrier networks in the U.S.

While AT&T has not said when its exclusive deal for the iPhone ends, the company has been preparing shareholders for a day when the iconic device will be available to its competitors. Rumor has it that Verizon Wireless, AT&T’s chief competitor, will get a version of the iPhone in January.

A recent survey by the market research firm Morpace found that 34 percent of those surveyed who already own an AT&T iPhone are waiting to upgrade their phones until the iPhone becomes available on another carrier. And about 47 percent said they’d at least consider moving over to Verizon for the iPhone. About a quarter of all AT&T subscribers said they were somewhat or very likely to switch to Verizon for an iPhone.

Morpace’s sample was relatively small. Out of 1,000 respondents, only about 100 were current AT&T iPhone subscribers, but Jay Heyboer, vice president of technology and Advanced analytics at Morpace, said the findings are still statistically valid.

The results aren’t too surprising given the flood of bad press AT&T has gotten over the past couple of years. iPhone users around the country, particularly in urban areas, have flooded the Web with complaints about the iPhone’s slow 3G speeds and dropped calls. Preorder problems with the iPhone 4 didn’t help AT&T’s reputation either as millions of potential customers were shut out of ordering the phone ahead of its launch in June.

One thing seems to be clear: iPhone owners are very loyal to the iPhone and Apple brand. About 77 percent of current iPhone owners say they intend to buy another Apple phone, according to a recent survey conducted by the Yankee Group.

And it looks like there is pent up demand for the iPhone on other carriers, despite the fact that wireless users on other networks now have the choice of many other competing phones, such as the Google Android phones. The Morpace survey also found that half of Verizon Wireless’s current customers said they were likely to get an iPhone once it comes to Verizon’s network. This is interesting considering the strong sales that Verizon has seen for the Google Android phones, such as the HTC Incredible and the Motorola Droid, Droid 2 and Droid X. The Yankee Group also found that a third of all smartphone owners of all types who intend to buy a smartphone intend to buy an iPhone. In fact, Apple is the most popular choice for a future smartphone among all mobile phone owners, according to a blog post written by Carl Howe, an analyst with Yankee Group.

Whether or not consumers will be as loyal to AT&T as they are to Apple and the iPhone is the big question.

Consumers on Verizon’s network continue to give the company high marks in terms of satisfaction for its network. In May, ChangeWave Research released data from a March 2010 survey that found 49 percent of Verizon’s customers said they were very satisfied with their service. In second place was Sprint Nextel with a 35 percent satisfaction rate. T-Mobile and AT&T both tied for last with only 23 percent of their customers who said there were very satisfied.

Verizon also came out on top in the fewest number of dropped calls in the ChangeWave survey. Only 1.5 percent of customer calls were lost over the prior three months. The dropped call rates were 2.4 percent for Sprint and 2.8 percent for T-Mobile, while AT&T was at the bottom with customers reporting 4.5 percent of their calls being lost. The dropped call rates marked Verizon’s best since September 2008 and AT&T’s worst over the same time frame.

But when it comes to retail satisfaction or customer support, Verizon drops to the bottom of the pack. A recent JD Power and Associates survey ranked T-Mobile USA as the highest in price promotions and in-store sales. Sprint came in second, AT&T third, and Verizon Wireless was last in this survey.

In terms of customer service, Vocal Laboratories(Vocalabs) recently released results from a survey that indicates that Verizon placed lastout of the four major U.S. wireless carriers when it came to satisfying customer service calls. Customers were interviewed following customer service calls to rate their experiences following the calls.

When you compare actual churn rates, or the rate at which customers drop one carrier’s service for another, AT&T and Verizon are neck and neck. For the second quarter of 2010, Verizon reported a churn rate of 1.27 percent and AT&T reported a churn rate of 1.29 percent for AT&T.

By contrast, Sprint and T-Mobile still have much higher rates of churn than either AT&T or Verizon. What this means is that regardless of whether they are satisfied or not, customers are much more likely to stay with AT&T or Verizon than they are these other carriers. And customers are just as likely to leave Verizon as they are AT&T.

Could this change when the iPhone finally comes to Verizon? Perhaps. But analysts warn that what consumers say they will do and what they actually do are two different things.

“There seems to be a significant number of people willing to consider switching from AT&T to Verizon for the iPhone,” said Morpace’s Heyboer. “Of course, the percentage of people who actually make that switch will probably be lower. But I think we are certainly picking up on dissatisfaction of some consumers and an openness to pursue other options.”

Verizon iPhone 4: Consumers prepared to wait – Survey

iphone 4

We know that the Verizon iPhone remains a key priority for a lot of smartphone owners in the US, but just how many of you are holding out for the still unannounced device? A new survey has been published, giving us some feedback on the Verizon iPhone.

As reported from Apple Insider, a new survey has been compiled by market research firm Morpace, and they reveal that key interest in the Verizon iPhone has mostly come from existing Verizon customers.

According to their survey of 1000 consumers, 29 percent of those surveyed said they were somewhat or very likely to pick up the iPhone if it were to become available on Verizon. The survery also revealed that 51 percent of current Verizon owners are ‘waiting’ for the iPhone 4 to arrive on the network.

Does this spell trouble for the likes of Sprint and AT&T? Let us know your thoughts on this, full article over at Apple Insider.

Samsung currently testing a GPS software fix for the Galaxy S

The Samsung Galaxy S and its variants are plagued with a troubling GPS problem that produces inaccurate GPS readings. Not only is the internal GPS slow to get a satellite lock, when a lock is finally obtained, the location information reported to the handset is often streets, sometimes even towns away from your physical location. Its not all doom and gloom for Galaxy S owners as Samsung is aware of the GPS problem and tweeted on Friday that they are in the process of testing a software fix. Samsung expects to have both the patch and its installation instructions available for download in September.

While you wait for Samsung to rollout this update, you can manually change a few GPS settings deep within the OS that will improve performance. If you are not afraid of what lies behind the LBSTestMode menu, then you can follow our detailed set of instructions here. These instructions were derived from the folks at xda-developers who took it upon themselves to craft a fix for the Galaxy’s ailing GPS. We tested this fix last month and confirmed that it works for the Samsung Vibrant and the AT&T Captivate. Presumably, the other variants of the Galaxy S will see a similar improvement in GPS performance following this 6-step modification.

No worries if you don’t want to apply this manual workaround. The official Samsung fix is less than six weeks away and the update will most likely contain a bunch of extra goodies which will make it a “must have” for any Galaxy S owners.

NZ Post aims to become card-maker for iPhone users

iPhone users can now create and send physical greeting cards from their phones through New Zealand Post.

The iPhone application – which can also be used on Apple’s iPad and iPod Touch and personal computers – is free to download. Cards cost $5 to create and send from any country to any country.

Users select an image from their image library or snap a photo on their phone and write a message to appear in the card. They then add the delivery address, view a preview of the card and pay for it with their credit card. Standard data traffic charges from internet providers will also apply.

NZ Post market engagement manager Fiona Woolley says it wants to make it easy for people to send cards and postcards.

“We had feedback from lots of people saying they still liked – if they’re sending things to husbands or wives or kids at university or nanas – getting things out of the letterbox. It’s the tangibility of it.

“So if you’re an American tourist standing at the top of Mt Cook, you can take a photo on your iPhone and just send it straight off.

“It’s instantaneous and it’s fun.”

The service has been labelled “a dog” by one e-commerce expert, who says NZ Post is stuck between the digital and traditional worlds.

Stefan Korn, an e-commerce analyst, says NZ Post is trying to leverage off new technology without letting go of its “snail mail” business model.

“That’s a big disconnect with where everyone else is at. Everyone else is trying to get away from using paper for lots of reasons.

“I don’t think it’s going to work. The reason is iPhones and the iPod Touch are all about being instant and on the spur of the moment. I don’t think it will appeal to the iPhone generation.”

Users may feel they can’t control what the end product looks like and could probably print off their own cards and post them for much less fuss and cost, he says.

NZ Post says there are 38 million iPhone users around the world and the potential for its service is huge, but Mr Korn says few people outside New Zealand would know of NZ Post.

“I think it’s a dog … but if they end up making a huge fortune out of it, good on them.”

Android Surpasses Apple’s iOS in Global Market

Google’s Android has overtaken Apple’s iOS in the global smartphone operating system market, the Financial Times reported Friday.

According to market researcher Gartner, Android’s market share climbed to 17.2 percent in the second quarter to rank third after Nokia’s Symbian (41.2 percent) and Research In Motion’s BlackBerry (18.2 percent).

iOS, used in the iPhone and other Apple mobile devices, slipped to fourth place with 14.2 percent.

Android is especially popular in the U.S. where it has also pushed aside Nokia and RIM to dominate the market, the business daily reported.
